Brain Matters: September 2019

The Neuro ICU Cockpit

Description:

This month’s webinar takes you to Zurich, Switzerland where you will hear about the Neuro ICU Cockpit developed by Dr. Emanuela Keller together with ETH Zurich and IBM Research Zurich. Their ICU Cockpit is a great example of how to use comprehensive data for predicting status and optimizing patient management.

Topics:

  • Challenges in intensive care monitoring
  • The ICU Cockpit infrastructure
  • Features and benefits of the ICU Cockpit

Date Recorded:

Brain Matters: June 2019

Spinal Cord Perfusion Pressure: A New Protocol for Hemodynamic Management of SCI

Description:

This month on Brain Matters, Lawrence Chyall and Debra Hemmerle discuss recent findings from the CAMPER study which demonstrate that maintaining SCPP greater than 50mmHg is a strong predictor of recovery in spinal cord injury (SCI). They present a new protocol that operationalizes these findings into the clinical practice of a Smart Neuro ICU. Dr. Geoff Manley makes a guest appearance to introduce the topic.

Topics:

  • Acute management and prevention of secondary injury
  • Role of SCPP in SCI outcomes
  • Strategies for managing SCPP

Date Recorded:

Friday, June 21, 2019

Improving outcomes in neonatal asphyxia: New Frontiers of Real Time Neuromonitoring Towards Precision Based Therapies

Description:

In this edition of Brain Matters, Dr. Lina Chalak discusses the topic of neonatal asphyxia. The session includes challenges and updates for infants with so called "mild HIE", new research involving physiological biomarkers to improve risk stratification of the disease severity within 6 hours, as well as new randomized trials of neuroprotection beyond hypothermia.

Topics:

  • Identifying neonates with HIE
  • Strategies for treating HIE
  • Neonatal asphyxia research and trials

Date Recorded:

Physiology Based Management of TBI: Challenges to Guide Therapy

Description:

Clinical management of severe traumatic brain injury has traditionally been focused on control of intracranial pressure, which may be an insensitive and late indicator of secondary brain injury. The monitoring and treating of other physiologic variables, particularly brain tissue oxygenation (PbtO2), may enhance patient care. Insights regarding physiological changes in the brain may be determined through responses of PbtO2 to controlled changes in FiO2, CO2 and MAP. The methods to perform and interpret these dynamic "challenges" are the focus of this webinar.

Topics:

  • Monitoring brain physiology
  • Performing FiO2, CO2, and MAP challenges
  • Interpreting results of challenges

Date Recorded:

Friday, May 3, 2019

Get to Know Your CNS Monitor: Basics and Beyond – April 2019

Description:

Are you a Moberg CNS user? Do you have questions or just want to learn more?

Please join us for "Get to Know Your CNS Monitor: Basics and Beyond", our web session focusing on operational features of the CNS Monitor. These sessions are conducted by our adult and neonatal Nurse Clinical Specialists, and are designed for the bedside CNS Monitor user, nurses and other "super-user" providers.

Each session begins with a brief demonstration of an often under-utilized feature on the CNS Monitor. Then we open the forum to discussion and Q&A with participants.

Topics:

  • System configuration features
  • Patient data file management
  • Data review tools

Date Recorded:

Friday, April 19, 2019

Brain Matters: March 2019

Spreading Depolarizations in the Injured Human Brain: Characterization, Clinical Significance and Implications for Neuromonitoring

Description:

This month on Brain Matters, Sharon Jewell, MRC Clinical Research Fellow at King's College London, department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience and Imperial College London, department of Bioengineering, discusses what Spreading Depolarizations (SD) are, how to record them, and why they are clinically relevant in the context of human brain injury.

She covers the electrical characteristics of SDs, the blood flow response, and the complex interactions that SDs share with other, established secondary insults. She also touches upon their discovery and historical aspects of SDs important for our current and future understanding.

Topics:

  • History of SDs
  • Recording methods
  • Causes and effects of SDs
